Types of overhead travelling cranes - bridge, suspension, gantry

Overhead travelling cranes are cranes, i.e. machines used to move loads vertically/horizontally. They operate in intermittent motion and allow loads to be moved and lifted and lowered over an area corresponding to the length of travel and the design of the crane.

There are various types of cranes in use, which are selected depending on where the equipment is installed and its intended use.

There are three main types of cranes:

• overhead travelling crane
• gantry crane
• overhead crane

The overhead travelling crane is mainly installed in industrial halls. It consists of a trussed platform placed on rails, on which a hoist moves. The operator can operate the crane from ground level or from a cabin. Some models are operated wirelessly.

Gantry cranes, or gantry cranes, are installed outdoors, for example on railway sidings, storage yards and shipyard ramps. They consist of a platform suspended from side bridges and may have two or more gates. The gates can move either on wheels or on rails. As with other gantry cranes, a linkage moves on the gantry platform.

Thanks to their modular design, suspension cranes can be adapted to be installed under the roof structure. As a result, they require little space in halls and allow optimum use of the room height.

The operation of cranes is possible after obtaining a licence. For this purpose, it is necessary to undergo UDT training and to take an examination. A positive result of the exam will give you crane authorisations.
