TDT is the abbreviation of Transportowy Dozór Techniczny. It stands for the state legal entity operating on the basis of the Act of 21 December 2000 on technical supervision. This TDT unit is subordinate to the minister in charge of transport-related matters. Its supervision applies to technical machinery that has been installed in the railway area, railway sidings, rail vehicles, as well as tanks (here we include tanks used in inland navigation, railway traffic and road traffic). In addition, the duties of the Transport Technical Supervision include:

  • Technical supervision of technical equipment located on seagoing vessels (does not include vessels where the technical equipment is under the technical supervision of a classification society), docks, pontoons and in the area of the port and marinas; 
  • Technical supervision of marine and inland waterway related equipment - non-pressure, pressure equipment, tanks and cranes; 
  • Supervision of technical equipment located in the process lines of the port handling bases;  
  • Supervision of technical equipment which is fitted to other sites located in the area intended for transhipment operations;  
  • Supervision of passenger and freight cableways and ski lifts. 

Transport Technical Supervision covers thousands of pieces of technical equipment. The predominant group is non-pressure and pressure equipment.  

As the TDT is subject to the Technical Supervision Act, it performs the tasks contained therein. These include: transport of dangerous goods, issuing certificates of admission of means of transport for the transport of dangerous goods  

Technical supervision and equipment 

Technical supervision is an activity enshrined in the Technical Supervision Act to strive to ensure the safe functioning and operation of technical devices. The technical devices that are subject to technical supervision are enshrined in a decree of the Council of Ministers on 7 December 2012. The list of equipment is very long and includes machinery that, for example, poses a hazard by expanding gases under pressure, spreading hazardous materials during their transport (e.g. steam and liquid boilers, cisterns, liquefied gas tanks), as well as all equipment of the so-called near transport (e.g. cranes, hoists). Equipment subject to technical supervision also includes: 

  • Stackers; 
  • Overhead cranes; 
  • Mobile platforms; 
  • Stairs and moving walkways; 
  • Passenger or freight cranes; 
  • Equipment for disabled persons; 
  • Lift trucks and mobile trucks. 

And also: 

  • Pressure cookers; 
  • Movable platforms; 
  • Pipelines; 
  • Track stackers; 
  • Loading equipment; 
  • Cableways. 

About TDT certification

It is a requirement that companies that manufacture, modernise, service and assemble technical equipment are certified. These certificates are also issued by the Transport Technical Supervision. The TDT also certifies employees who perform welded joints, for example.  

A good way to get your UDT licence is to receive training and acquire the necessary knowledge.
