Construction crane operator - training

ERGON Centre invites you to attend a course on the operation of construction cranes (lifts), which will give you the necessary qualifications. It seems that this type of equipment is easy to use and you may wonder why anyone needs a licence to operate it. It is true that a simple passenger lift in an apartment block does not require special training for the operator, but other, more complex types of lift definitely do.

Who is the course for and how do I sign up for it?

The construction crane operator course is for anyone who meets the following requirements:

  • reaching the age of eighteen,
  • have a minimum of elementary education,
  • no health contraindications to exercising the profession.

Other information, such as your professional qualifications or what you have done before, is only a guide for us to prepare a suitable curriculum. We also organise training for organised groups. So if you are a business owner and want to train your employees, you can do so together with ERGON. In both cases, enrolment takes place by phone or email. During the conversation, an interview is carried out, on the basis of which we agree the date and place of the training. Price and other key information is provided upon enrolment.

Training programme

The aim of the training is to provide trainees with comprehensive knowledge in the operation and maintenance of construction cranes. The training programme is divided into theoretical and practical classes.

Theoretical classes include: Practical activities include:
- technical supervision news,
- general concepts of transport and cargo,
- breakdown and main parameters of the lifts,
- construction of cranes,
- the issue of electrical engineering in crane construction,
- basic principles of equipment maintenance,
- discussing health and safety issues with cranes.
- learning to operate cranes,
- activities carried out before, during and after work,
- the operation of machinery with which the load is placed in the cab.

Benefits the ERGON Centre gives you

In addition to a guaranteed number of theoretical and practical classes, ERGON has also prepared teaching materials for you, made available on an online platform. There you will find instructional videos and sample theoretical tests. You will be provided with the necessary equipment and constant supervision by your instructor during your lessons. You can also count on a small snack. After the course, we help students to register for the final exam.

Where do we organise training?

ODK ERGON operates in many cities throughout Poland . However, if you are interested in training for your employees and are able to gather a specific group, we can travel to you. This is not a problem for us, we try to reach all interested parties throughout the country. We will discuss the details with you during the enrolment process.

Wondering what the exam is like?

It consists, like the training, of two parts and takes place in front of a designated unit of the Technical Inspection Authority. If you pass the written test, you can move on to practice. This is nothing more than a test of your knowledge of how to operate the equipment. It is important to note that the examiner may ask you follow-up questions to test your knowledge before proceeding with the designated task. If you do not pass the practical task, you unfortunately have to take the theoretical part again as well. Once you have passed the whole thing, you will receive your UDT licence allowing you to work as a construction crane operator.

UDT authorisations for building cranes

Once qualified, the operator is able to work with cranes in two categories:

  • for building lifts (operation of goods and passenger building lifts and goods lifts),
  • operation of internal-controlled and hospital cranes.

It is important to know that the authorisations of the UDT are not granted in perpetuity. They expire 10 years after being issued. When the period of validity expires, you should submit a request for the renewal of your licence. It is important to submit the application to the OTI unit no later than 3 months before the expiry date. The application can be submitted electronically or in hard copy. A prerequisite for renewal is that you have worked as an operator of the equipment for at least 3 years within the last 5 years.

Construction cranes - what are they?

Construction cranes are nothing more than lifts. They are not only used to transport people. They are also found in places other than apartment blocks, hotels or shopping malls. There are different types of lifts to transport cargo or people. Construction cranes have a cabin or platform in which goods are transported. They move along guides inclined to the horizontal at an angle of more than 15 degrees, between certain levels, usually to a great height. Construction cranes are subject to technical supervision and therefore require a licence to operate them.

Construction cranes can be classified by a number of features, such as:

  • crane drive type,
  • shaft construction,
  • control method,
  • the construction of the drive mechanism,
  • crane construction,
  • purpose.

You will learn this detailed breakdown by signing up for training at ERGON.

Division of cranes according to their use

Passenger crane - is responsible for the transport of persons only. It takes place vertically between the floors of the buildings. The control panel is located in the middle of the cabin and is accessible to everyone. It is the most ordinary lift found in buildings visited on a daily basis.

Freight crane - This type does not have a control panel inside the lift shaft, as it is only designed to transport loads between floors of buildings. It is characterised by a self-supporting structure and semi-automatic operation. The operator of this type of lift has the task of loading the load, closing the shaft and selecting the transport level. It is used in buildings where there are warehouses or production halls and on construction sites.

Freight and passenger crane - It has a similar application to the goods lift, but in this case there can be people in the lift shaft along with the goods. The control takes place inside the cabin.

Hospital crane - As the name suggests, these lifts are found in hospitals. It is used to transport people, hospital beds and medical equipment. It has functions designed for privileged driving.

Freight lift - This is a different type of construction crane from the others. In its construction, it is distinguished by a platform sliding on a mast, which is attached to a mobile chassis and lowered in an inclined manner onto the roof of the building. It is used to transport loads.
